Science for conservation

The Photophysics and Laser Technology Department IFFM PASci in Gdansk cooperates with restaurators and curators in the field of laser technique and latest analytical techniques utilized in conservation of works of art for many years. The common works result in studies and projects making available the up-to-date achievements of physics for the preservation of cultural heritage. Our participation in European projects and international cooperation with research centers abroad confirm the level of competence of our Laboratory in the field of diagnostic techniques for the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage.

We offer following expertises:
- authenticity and provenience analysis,
- chemical constitution of alloys,
- pigment analysis,
- retouching detection and analysis.
Depending on needs and objects the examination can be carried out under laboratory and also field conditions as well.

Other services:
- the consultation and assistance in the preparation of conservation and restoration projects,
- preliminary research and the discussion of results,
- the cost calculation of the analytical surveys,
- esential studies of the researches part of the project,
- coordination of the cooperation of conservators and researchers.

We offer studies for conservation projects by using facialities of IFFM Lab, Regional Centre of Spectroscopic Research and MOLAB by means of the following equipment:

 chemical analysis:
    - portable XRF spectrometer for in-situ nondestructive analysis of elemental composition
      of cultural heritage objects
    - laser spectroscopy: LIBS and LIF
    - near infrared spectroscopic technique facilities
    - EDX spectrometer

 investigations of surface morphology:
    - SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy)

 color analysis:
    - spectrocolorimeter

Our constantly updated databases:
paper The internet database of discolorations and stains on paper
contains information about many kinds of stains to be seen on paper surfaces divided in sections:
- surface contaminations,
- stains,
- microbiological kind stains and discolorations,
- surface discolorations,
alongside with detailed photographical documentation and description of the damages.
analysis The spectroscopic database of the cultural heritage objects and reference materials
which consist of two parts:
Reference data - results of spectroscopic analysis of reference materials,
Case studies - results obtained for historical objects.
