Jarosław Mikielewicz was born on 10th April 1941 in Vilnius. He started his higher education studies at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Gdańsk University of Technology in 1959 where he graduated in 1964 with the Master of Engineering degree. The degree of the Doctor of Philosophy was awarded to him in 1968 by the Board of the Machine Construction Department of the Gdańsk University of Technology for the dissertation titled Analysis of application of 'liquid fins' in high-temperature variable-pressure recuperator and the degree of Doctor of Sciences (habilitation) in 1972 by the same board for the dissertation titled Selected problems of vapour generation of low-temperature medium in the two-component power plant cycle.
Research practice
He visited several prominent institutions in the area of heat transfer during scientific placements at the Institute of Thermal Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk, the Institute of Heat and Mass Transfer of Byelorussian Academy of Sciences in Minsk, University of Delaware, Michigan University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in USA. In the period 1981-1982 he stayed at the Brown University, Providence, USA as a Visiting Professor. In 1986, in the frame of the DAAD stipend, he visited 4 German universities within the period of one month, and in 1988 he stayed for a month at three American universities being funded by the American Academy of Sciences. In 1991 he stayed for a month in Canada invited by the McMaster University. At that time he visited several universities and research centres in Canada.
Scientific career
Professor J. Mikielewicz started his professional career in 1964 subsequently climbing the ladder of scientific positions starting as a graduate assistant at the Gdańsk University of Technology, and then assistant, research associate, docent, and the full professor at the Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery of Polish Academy of Sciences (IFFM PAS). The title of professor in technical sciences was awarded to him by the State Council with the decree of 13 September 1979. In December 1990, on the basis of positively appraised procedure by the Central Qualification Commission, the Academy Secretary called him to the post of the full professor. He had been the Head of the Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer Division at IFFM PAS since 1972 up to 1992. In 1992 he was elected by the Scientific Board of the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery PAS to the post of Deputy Director for Scientific Issues, and in 1998 to a post of the Institute Director. He has been serving as a President of the Committee for Thermodynamics and Combustion for several years now.
Apart from the scientific activity he carried out also education since 1972, firstly at the High School of Engineering in Koszalin and subsequently at the Gdańsk University of Technology. In 2004 Doctor Honiris Causa degree was awarded to Jarosław Mikielewicz by Cracow University of Technology and in 2009 by Koszalin University of Technology.
