Alfred Zmitrowicz was born on January 25 1950 in Braniewo. He received the M Sc degree in civil engineering from Gdańsk University of Technology in 1973. In December 1973 he began his research at the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery in Gdańsk (from Research Assistant to Associate Professor). Ph D degree he received from the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery in 1980 and D Sc degree (habilitation) in 1994. He has international research experience and subsequently (1984-1986, 1991, 2001) he was a Research Fellow of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany) at Universität Stuttgart and Technische Universität Darmstadt in groups of Prof. H. Bufler and Prof. K. Hutter.
The themes of his research interests are modeling of friction and wear of materials, structural dynamics, continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. He has formulated friction and wear models with anisotropy and non-homogeneity effects in materials with complex microstructures and/or with evolving properties. He has developed models and simulation methods of abrasive wear of materials. He has performed simulations of vibrations of turbine blade assemblies with friction in interfaces of non-continuous shroud rings.
He is active as a reviewer in scientific journals, a conference session organizer (minisymposia on contact mechanics) and a conference session chairman. He was a coordinator of the Baltic Science Festival in Gdańsk (2008-2015), an annual even designed to promote scientific achievements.
Alfred Zmitrowicz is a member of the following associations: Societas Humboldtiana Polonorum (since 1989), Member Main Supervisory Board (2016-present), Member Executive Council (2007-2013); Mechanics of Materials Section of the Committee on Mechanics of The Polish Academy of Sciences (since 1994); Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (since 1978).
Alfred Zmitrowicz was awarded Scientific Secretary Award from The Polish Academy of Sciences (1982), Distinguished Service Gold Cross from The President of Poland (1991), “Sint sua praemia laudi” Medal from The Pomerania Province Governor (2006), Laurel of the Societas Humboldtiana Polonorum (2013), Gold Medal for Long Service from The President of Poland (2016).
