Testing of microorganisms activity
On 20th Feb. we had meeting in Municipal Waste Processing Facility - Eko Dolina. The purpose of visit by IMP staff in Eko Dolina facility was substantive consultation with representatives of the CleanBacter company and help in applying effective microorganisms (EM) on the organic biodegradable waste compost pile.
The original approach related to the composting intensification and reduction of odors emitted during the mentioned process was the use of anaerobic EM. Although anaerobic EM can contribute to the reduction of odorous substances (tests have not yet been completed), their ability to organic matter decomposition is limited. Therefore, parallel to the anaerobic EM tests a larger scale test with aerobic EM was started.
At the composting plant facility a solution of aerobic EM (supplied by CleanBacter representatives) was prepared . EM solution was evenly applied to a previously prepared pile made of selectively collected biodegradable waste (about 20 tons of waste) . For continuous temperature control a wireless thermometer was installed. It was assumed that to maintain aerobic conditions, the waste prism would be mixed twice a week. In order to compare the effectiveness of applied EM (e.g. the rate of degradation of organic matter) behind the tested prism, a reference prism was prepared. It is expected that during the two-month composting process the volume as well as the emission of odors from EM-enriched pile will be significantly reduced compared to the reference.
In addition, representatives of IMP PAN consulted the coordinator of the energy team regarding problems related to obtaining energy from biogas. The presence of hydrogen sulfide and silicon compounds in biogas drastically reduces its quality therefore the topics of biogas purification were discussed. Biogas purification installation was presented and possible research work in this field was also found.
