Abstract
The method of characteristics as used up to now for the analysis of water hammers provides nurnerical results only. Application of the operator calculus for tbe same purpose gives an analytic solution in the operator form. The parameters of hydraulic line which are sought can be obtained as functions of time from the inverse operator transform.
It is assumed that the velocity of liquid is low compared, to the speed. of sound (as in the method of characteristics) and that the dependence of the pressure losses on the liquid velocity is linear. The same boundary conditions as in the method of characteristics are assumed.
The operator analysis of water hammers as discussed in the paper makes it possible to apply for the synthesis of systems protecting against effects of water hammers methods used in the analysis and synthesis of automatic control systems.
