C5/D1 - Turbine Department

Dr. Łukasz Witanowski is a Research Associate in the Turbine Department at the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery, Polish Academy of Sciences, in Gdańsk, Poland. His research focuses on the design, modeling, and optimization of turbomachinery, particularly turbines and compressors, as well as the development of high-efficiency energy systems. His main research interests include energy conversion and efficient energy utilization technologies, with particular emphasis on Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems, refrigeration systems, high-temperature heat pumps, and waste heat recovery technologies.

He is the Principal Investigator of the COOLERHEAT project – Innovative Technology for Cooling Production from Waste Heat (LIDER14/0173/2023), funded by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) under the 14th edition of the LIDER programme. The project aims to develop an innovative refrigeration system powered by low-temperature waste heat, integrating an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) with a Vapor Compression Cycle (VCC). A key component of the proposed technology is a high-speed, hermetically sealed turbocompressor unit (https://www.imp.gda.pl/coolerheat).

Previously, he served as the Principal Investigator of the research project “Hybrid Optimization Method Combining Swarm Intelligence Algorithms and the Nelder–Mead Method for Improving ORC Microturbine Efficiency” (No. 2015/17/N/ST8/01782), funded by the National Science Centre (NCN), Poland (https://www.imp.gda.pl/hybrydowa_metoda_optymalizacyjna).
